Verizon iPhone woos away Smartphone flaunters

Awaiting Verizon iPhone’s release on 10th February, a lot of buyers are already lining up. On the first day of pre-orders, taken on 3rd Feb., huge numbers of Verizon iPhones were already sold. A recent market survey conducted from January 28 to January 31 by uSamp, an online sampling and survey company, reveals that out of 700 Smartphone users, 29% AT&T iPhone users and 24% of Verizon Blackberry and Android users are willing to switch to the Verizon iPhone. Out of the 700 users tested, 54% of Verizon Smartphone users are likely to switch to the iPhone, citing a better interface (60%), Mobile Safari web browser (58%), better media features(51%), more memory(43%), and camera(41%).

Those Verizon Android and Blackberry users not wishing to switch to the iPad state conversion costs(46%), e-mail and messaging (23%), keyboard(34%), customization and widgets (20%), maps and gps(23%), and web browser (19%), BlackBerry messenger (28%), as the reason to stay fixed to their Smartphone. According to Research in motion, about more than half of total Verizon’s BlackBerry users (66%) and about half of its android users (44 %) are likely to make the switch. The survey by uSamp also indicates that about 25% of the At&T iPad users from among the 700 surveyed, are willing to move on to the Verizon iPhone because of dropped calls and low coverage, and 22% cite product features behind the decision to change.

In an independent survey, Mashable.com, surveyed about 5,000 users, out of which 30% indicate joining the bandwagon as soon as possible, and another 23% would switch on arrival of the next version. It also indicated that the bandwidth requirements on Verison’s network might limit user’s experience, though the company is planning to throttle the download speeds for top 5% of its users. Apart from these speculations, the market is still unpredictable. Wait till 10th Feb. to see how many takers the new iPhone will actually garner. The question is - are you willing to give up your Smartphone for the new arrival?

YouTube to recommend movies based on your sentiments

The hugely popular Google owned video sharing site, YouTube, has now acquired Fflick, a website devoted to movie related reviews, information and news, based on data collected from popular social networking sites and blogs. All movies related tweets posted on twitter are analyzed to see what’s on people’s minds. The site filters all that is discussed about movies, and then analyses what is relevant and how it can be used to market new movies and videos. Launched last year in August, by Kurt Wilms and three other ex Digg employees, the site’s popularity and potential as a survey tool for movies and videos, made YouTube take the plunge in January 2011.

YouTube’s motive is to enhance the revenue generated by its video based services by analyzing people’s sentiments. Fflick recommends movies based on emotions, and helps in finding video content similar to what the users like and watch regularly. All opinions posted on Twitter, Facebook or other networks will help in estimating what is most popular and what people generally prefer watching. That way, recommendations can be made to people on what to watch next, thereby increasing chances of sales. In a YouTube blogpost, Shiva Rajaraman, (Group Product Manager, YouTube) says, “We were impressed by the technical talent, design instincts and entrepreneurial spirit of the Fflick team. As part of YouTube, the Fflick team will help us build features to connect you with the great videos talked about all over the web, and surface the best of those conversations for you to participate in.We look forward to rolling out more features that help you enjoy and discover new videos to watch, so stay tuned!”

YouTube may start a video rental service soon, and the acquiring of Fflick, would help in increasing sales. The sentiment engine provided by Fflick will let users know what their friends and others around the world feel about movies and videos, giving better reviews than movie critics do.

Operation Egypt by ‘Anonymous’

There’s more going on in Egypt than just mass protests and stone pelting. The Egyptian Ministry of Information and President Mubarek’s National Democratic Party has lots more to worry about. After a partial lift on the ban on internet usage on Wednesday, after a five day long blackout, government websites were hacked by the international hackers group called ‘Anonymous’. This hacking spree is being dubbed as Operation Egypt. Recently in the news for hacking various company websites like mastercard.com and PayPal, who denied transfer of funds to WikiLeaks, they are back in full support to protestors in Egypt.

Gathering an army of hackers across the world, the ‘Anonymous’ group took down the government’s websites, though this time the number of participants was lower (about 500) than in December, when they supported WikiLeaks. Judging from their previous hacks of government websites in Tunisia and Yemen, they seem to have a fixation in supporting anti-government protestors in their own unique way. In Yemen, they hacked websites of the Yemeni Ministry of Information, the tax office and the President Ali Abdullah Saleh’s website.

As revealed by an anonymous member, they used a program called Low Orbit Ion cannon, which floods a particular website with fake traffic, bringing it down in the process if it doesn’t have enough capacity. In a Facebook message revealing their involvement in the act, the group says, "Anonymous can not and will not stand idly while people are being denied their basic rights and human liberties. Yet there are still a lot of governments worldwide who fail to even aspire to the standard of freedom that was set the Universal Declaration Of Human Rights…". Well, Egypt’s President is definitely listening!
